Humboldt Park
No hesitation. While I’m having initial “what should this look like” thoughts, I move my small chair around a few feet to help crack open the view through the trees. In Humboldt park there is a bell shaped copper turned turquoise roof as a touch point. I consider it framed between two trees trunks that both curve slightly – and I see their branches are jutting and arching and providing a ton of visual noise. I imagine for a moment that I’ll make 2 or even three paintings. I work fast – how hard can it be?
But I’m still working on the first look deep into our second hour and it feels like the image is still sitting on the plane of the paper and not rooting in. I’m not disappointed though, I like the curves and speckles and I’m aware that I’m just myself. Observing and marking with as much pleasure as I can. Trying to extend the touch of my brush on the paper to not leave a dot for a leaf. How can I linger and turn the brush and paint just this one way: up, down or sideways to discover a shape I haven’t imagined I’ve seen.
